Christmas trees are one of the most recognized traditions of the holiday season. But what happens after the holiday season? Many people simply throw their Christmas trees away, yet trees are valuable organic material that can be recycled and chipped into mulch. This mulch is used in public gardens and parks across the valley to help conserve soil moisture and keep plants healthy. Recycling your tree is a gift that will keep on giving back to the community.
Drop off your Christmas tree for free at over 30 convenient drop sites from December 26th - January 15th. Remove all non-organic objects such as lights, wire, tinsel, ornaments and nails. Foreign objects contaminate the mulch and damage the chipper. Flocked trees cannot be recycled.
Las Vegas Valley residents have recycled 196,085 trees since the program started counting trees in 2001, creating more than 1,705 tons of mulch. Last winter, 20,206 trees were recycled, chipped, and turned into 176 tons of nutrient-rich mulch used for landscaping projects and dust control. Local landfill volume was spared 2,694 cubic yards - roughly equivalent to the size of ten school buses. Based on curbside counts done by Republic in the 2014 to 2015 tree recycling season, our community is recycling approximately 63% of the trees from single family residences (apartments can't be calculated at this time.)
Want to recycle, but unable to drop your tree off...1-800-GOT-JUNK? Las Vegas will pick up trees from your house for a small fee (a discount is available when you pre-schedule the pick-up). Call 1-800-GOT-JUNK? Las Vegas 24 hours a day to schedule a pickup and your tree will be dropped off at a recycling site.
The City of Henderson is offering a free mulch pick up for Valley residents. Residents will be able to pick up mulch on a first come first serve basis at Acacia Park and Pecos Legacy Park from December 28 - January 14, 7:00AM-3:00PM. People will need to bring their own containers and shovels to get the mulch. The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension (UNCE) is also offering free mulch at their Center for Urban Horticulture Studies in North Las Vegas at 4600 Horse Drive, North Las Vegas, NV 89129. This location is open to the public on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 8:00am-12:30pm. And residents can pick up mulch at the Lifelong Learning Center at 8050 Paradise Rd., Las Vegas, NV 89123. This center is open to the public on Monday through Friday from 8:00am-5:00pm.
